Accreditation involves a thorough and rigorous evaluation. This assessment focuses on the technical competence of the laboratory to perform specific tests and calibrations. The accreditation body verifies that the laboratory meets all technical and management requirements established in the standard, including personnel competence, method validation, measurement traceability, and quality control. Accreditation provides official recognition and confidence in the laboratory's technical competence.

On the other hand, the certification of a laboratory under ISO 17025 refers to the assessment of the laboratory's quality management system.

This certification is carried out by an external and independent certification body. The certification body verifies that the laboratory has implemented and maintains an effective quality management system that meets the requirements of ISO 17025. This includes aspects such as documentation of the quality management system, risk management, internal audits, and continuous improvement. Certification demonstrates that the laboratory has a robust and reliable quality management system in place.

In summary, accreditation under ISO 17025 focuses on the assessment of the laboratory's technical competence, while certification focuses on the evaluation of the laboratory's quality management system. Both processes are important to ensure the quality and confidence in the results of tests and calibrations performed by the laboratory.
